Is Time Going By Fast or Slow?



MAAAAAUUUUURIIIIIII!!!! How is it going everyone? I have officially survived 2 weeks in the MTC. Each day starts to kind of blend together so let's see if I can remember everything... As all of you know, this week was Halloween! I hope you all had an awesome Halloween and got plenty of candy. We had class and lessons all day, so unfortunately, we didn't get any big Halloween celebration. HOWEVER, once we all returned to our residence, all my missionaries on our floor decided to have our own floor Halloween. I tried to keep track of all the costumes people were wearing, but I think the most popular costume was dressing up like a missionary... I could be wrong though. Our room is known as the "food room" because we receive so many snacks from home. By the way, I love everything everyone has sent me, but if i would have eaten all the snacks by myself, I would already be 15 lbs heavier.... So we decided to share a little love with the other missionaries on our floor. Just know that you not only made my day, but that of a young snackless missionary haha. 

I've been making some really good friends here! The missionaries from Tonga may or may not be the best people I have ever met. They are so upbeat, funny, and full of the spirit. You can't help but smile when you are around them. Ill include some pictures of them in this email.

The language is still super tough, but I'm getting somewhere. We are given 3 "investigators" (which are members of the church that speak Kiribati that pretend to be investigators) and we have to teach them about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I love talking about the church and the happiness it brings me, but it is so hard to express myself in a language that is so foreign to me. Sometimes, I find a thought come into my head and I say it out loud in Kiribati. I have no idea what I am saying or where I am going with it but it always works out... This really is the Lord's work and he is here to help me every step of the way.

Alright... SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK.  I received an email from my stake president this week. I was in the middle of class and the was doing all that I could to stay calm and focused. In his email, he included the scripture, Doctrine and Covenants 45:62 and it states...

"For verily I say unto you, that great things await you"

The scriptures never fail to bring me happiness and hope. I promise that they can do the same for you. If there is ever a time you feel lonely, sad, discouraged in any way, turn to the scriptures in prayer. You will find happiness. I love you all and have a great week.

HELLO EVERYONE! Let me just start by saying how much I miss you all!  Hope each and every one of you are doing great. Thank you all so much for your emails. Literally, they make my week! This week was just as intense as the last one! I'm still trying to adjust to the culture and I know it is going to take some time. People here run on "Kiribati time" which means everyone just shows up an hour or two late. It can be kinda frustrating when you have a really busy/full day but It is something I'll have to get used to. My companion and I got invited to several bootaki this week. Bootaki are parties that the locals here have. They always have the missionaries eat first so we stand up and walk over to these buckets full of food that we have no idea what it is. We reach in, grab some mystery meat, some mystery mush, and some mystery drink and go sit cross-legged on the ground. I look over at my companion and ask "do you ever think the next bite is going to kill you?...

Devon will be entering the Provo MTC on October 18, 2017.  He will be serving a 2-year mission in Kiribati, a group of islands located in the Central Pacific, speaking Kiribati.  Dress code:  short-sleeved white shirt and tie with pants (rolling is optional) and sandals, crocs or flip-flops.

My Christmas Gift

MERRRRRYYYY CHRISTMAS!!!!! I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas! We had our Christmas a whole day before you guys (since we are a whole day ahead of the US based on time). For the couple days leading up to Christmas, all of the church members here gathered in the main church building to celebrate. The rest of the Elders and I tried thinking of all the things we could do to bring the Christmas spirit to the locals. We tried thinking of music and decorations and all different things but then we realized.... their Christmas celebration blows ours out of the water. All the little boys and girls throw on skirts made of palm leaves and headbands made of flower, they blast the Kiribati music, and they do exactly what the lyrics say.... "Shake your bumbum!". Everyone just shakes their hips around and dance and laugh. They had the elders get up and I didn't know I could move like that... but I did! My dancing was honestly so bad but they didn't care.
